USB Drive Component Types
USB drive does not have many components to it. The most important ones are the main chip and control chip. The cost of USB drives is mainly derived from these two components.
USB Drive Basic Structure
Regular types are divided into controller and memory chip.
The small one is the controller chip. It controls the basic functions of the USB Drive, similar to how CPU works for computers.
The larger one is the memory chip. The data is stored on this chip. When the controller chip malfunctions, you lose access to the data in the memory chip. However, the data inside the memory chip is not damaged, so recovery is possible.

USB Drive Chip Types
The type of chip used depends on the capacity of the drive.
●TSOP
The wiring extends from the black chip. Commonly used in USB drives under 8GB. Recovery is easy and cheap.
●BGA
There are multiple connector points on the bottom side. Used for those over 16GB or SSDs. Recovery is difficult and expensive compared to TSOP type.

●COB
The memory IC and controller board is together. It is also referred to as a monolith type. The cost of manufacturing is low, but the data size is large, resulting in higher price and difficulty to recover.

●2 chips with a controller chip
This is a complex product with 2 memory chips on the board, common in Buffalo USB drives. Using two chips most likely keeps the expenses down. While it may seem contradictory, the older memory chips are far cheaper than newer and larger capacity chips.
●1 chip only
This type contains both memory and controller chip as one.
